Today’s beer profile hails from West Toronto and the #Aleyards, Rainhard Brewing Co’s Armed N’ Secret. Rainhard has recently completed a big expansion of their brewhouse and can now produce more tasty and interesting beer for us (yay!).
Armed N’ Secret is the latest in a series of Pale Ales in “Armed” series. The original is Armed N’ Citra. Then there was Armed N’ Simcoe and Armed N’ Mosaic. The pale ales all showcase the different hop they are named for. All are really solid beers in a much maligned style. Pale Ale’s have been usurped by IPAs in the last few years but with the “Armed” series from Rainhard, the style is still represented well.
Secret Tasting Notes
Armed N’ Secret is a golden-yellow colour with a bit of a haze and a foamy white top. It’s got a medium carbonation level. The aroma is tropical and fruity, possibly passionfruit. The flavour is hop-forward with melon and passionfruit coming through. The mouthfeel is medium and smooth. The finish is bitter but not overly so. Armed N’ Secret is a really great pale ale.
I’m a big fan of classic beer styles and the American Pale Ale style is one of the reasons for the rise of craft beer in North America. Long before the days of “IPAs all day”, pale ale’s carried the torch for breweries and were the flagship beers of many breweries. The “Armed” series definitely honours the classic craft beer style.
