Beer Profile: Santa Rosa Special by Junction Craft Brewery
ABV 4.0% IBU 50
A quick search of Santa Rosa Special on untappd (beer cataloging site) indicates that there are several variations of this IPA by Junction Craft Brewery. It seems other versions have higher IBU and ABV. I’m not sure if Junction are tinkering or if its just a change in hop acid levels from crop to crop. I can tell you that Santa Rosa Special doesn’t need any tinkering.
Santa Rosa Special is a pale straw colour with a generous white frothy cap and higher carbonation level. Theres a subdued citrus and pine aroma. The medium mouthfeel is satisfying and leaves you with a lingering bitterness. This is a solid, all-day IPA.
The bitterness is subtle on the back end and helps to distinguish this as a session IPA instead of a hoppy pale ale.
I have always loved the session IPA style. When executed well, it provides all the taste and aroma I expect in an IPA but doesn’t overwhelm with a high ABV. It doesn’t really matter if the lines are blurred between the styles because we all benefit from the results!
