ABV 7.2% IBU 55-65
Today’s beer profile comes to us from one of my favourite neighbourhood hangouts, Indie Alehouse. Breakfast Porter is a throwback to when the porter style was the world’s most popular. I’m not exactly sure what is ‘breakfast’ about it but I’m excited to find out!
A Little Background
The Junction is one of Toronto’s most trendy and hip neighbourhoods. The Junction has a good mix of restaurants, breakfast spots, and breweries. It’s family friendly and accessible by transit. Luckily for me, it’s only a short 10 minute walk away. Indie Alehouse is the best brew pub in the West End, and it’s located right in the heart of the Junction.
Breakfast Porter is a deep and dark brown colour with a beige foamy top. The carbonation level is medium but the mouthfeel is full-bodied and smooth owing to the oats and high ABV. The aroma is a combination of subtle roast and chocolate notes with a hint of coffee. The flavour is similar to the aroma but more pronounced. This isn’t a complicated beer but it’s really well executed.
At 7.2% ABV, I don’t think I’ll reach for Breakfast Porter instead of my morning coffee. I will, however, reach for Breakfast Porter again the next time I frequent the Indie Alehouse bottle shop.
In a not completely unrelated matter, Indie Alehouse has the best fried chicken in the city and it’s something you need in your life.
