Canadian Best Bitter by St. Mary Axe

Today’s beer profile features a Classic British style beer coming from London. London, Ontario that is. Canadian Best Bitter is the flagship beer of St. Mary Axe Brewery. The Best Bitter style is one of my favourites and is a particular weakness for me. Lets find out more about the brewery.

Religion and Beer?

There isn’t much info out there on this brewery on the net, even on their web page. The site basically states they are an Ontario Microbrewery with founders based in Toronto but the beer is brewed in London, ON. The site also explains that the brewery is named after the street of a famous church in London, UK – but not necessarily after the church. The logo/crest for the brewery does have an obvious religious link.

Canadian Best Bitter is a lovely copper colour with a frothy top. Its clear and has a medium carbonation. The aroma is of earthy hops with classic UK styles (Fuggles or East Kent Goldings would be my guess). The flavour is malt forward with a rounded bitterness. There is a mild spice note often found in UK hops as well. Overall, a well executed Best Bitter.

What I love about UK Ales are the subtle complexities in the ingredients. You won’t find one specific thing that overpowers the beer. UK styles brewed right tend to be very well-balanced beers and Canadian Best Bitter is one of them. Well done St. Mary Axe!
