I was fortunate enough to be near Rainhard Brewing Co on the launch day for Drifter, the new Helles Lager. I think its a bit of a curve ball from the style of beer I’m used to getting from Rainhard, but it certainly doesn’t disappoint.
Rainhard Brewing Co is likely best known for Armed N’ Citra, a bright American Pale Ale, and Hearts Collide, an Imperial Stout. I was a bit surprised to see a Helles Lager on offer in their beer fridge as I’m quite used to being spoiled by their tasty ales. Drifter is available on tap in the brewery and in 355mL cans.
Drifter is a pale golden colour with ample carbonation and a white frothy top. The taste is crisp, clean and slightly sweet. The finish is dry and refreshing. There is a bit more malt flavour than you may expect in a lager.
Drifter seems like a gateway beer for people new to the craft beer scene. It’s something that everyone can enjoy, but more specifically, the person who typically drinks the corporate beer. Drifter delivers what we all want in a lager. It could even help some people drift into the world of craft beer.
