ABV 5% IBU 32
This week’s beer profile comes to us from North of the city in Barrie, ON and Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery. Hoptical Illusion is styled as a ‘Almost Pale Ale’ on the can. The description states it’s a hybrid between a British IPA and a pale ale.
There are a few details in the can artwork that are worth noting. Firstly, a line of lyrics from “Fifty Mission Cap” by The Tragically Hip about the Leafs winning the cup. There is also a hockey rink, a map of North America, an igloo, and a beaver. Lots of ‘Canadiana’ to digest just from looking at the can.
Hoptical Illusion pours a nice clear copper with medium carbonation
and a frothy white top. The aroma is subtle but has a definite earthy note to it. The flavour is malt forward – a tip of the cap to the UK roots of the beer. There is a mild citrus flavour in the beer that would be unusual in a UK IPA. The finish is a firm and lingering bitterness.
My favourite style of beer is the British IPA and this beer is really close to that style. It’s a bit malty, bitter, earthy, and it’s well-balanced. There truly aren’t many breweries brewing this style of beer these days. It’s too bad, because this beer’s a beauty.
