Today’s beer profile comes to us from the #Aleyards and Shacklands Brewing Co. Mezza Notte is a milk stout that’s fermented using belgian yeast. Shacklands Brewing Co has crafted some of my favourite beers over the past year so I’m excited to try this one.
An interesting note about Shacklands is that all of their beers are conditioned in the bottles and even in the kegs they serve. This means that all the beers undergo one extra small fermentation to carbonate instead of carbonating under pressure using CO2. This can also impart an added complexity and smoothness to the beer. It’s just one more step that shows how craft breweries put care and effort into producing amazing beer.
Mezza Notte is Italian for midnight. This could mean that the beer is mysterious, dangerous, or that the beer should be consumed at midnight. Or it could reflect that the colour of the beer is as dark as midnight. Either way, Mezza Notte has proven it’s mysterious and it has certainly caught my interest.
Mezza Notte is a wonderful deep and dark brown/black. No light comes through when I hold it up to the light. It has a low carbonation and a reserved creamy top. The aroma is of roasted malts and coffee. The taste is a perfect balance of coffee, chocolate, with a hint of sweetness and bitterness. The mouthfeel is full and silky smooth.
Mezza Notte is an amazing beer and Shacklands should be very proud to be producing such high quality beer. I must admit that I have trouble keeping this beer in my fridge – it seems to go missing shortly after I stock it. If you haven’t tried Mezza Notte then you need to stop by Shacklands and try it. You need it in your life.
