Today’s beer profile comes to us from Mimico, aka the jewel of Etobicoke – Toronto’s West end neighbourhood. Black Oak Brewing Co has been brewing craft beer in Etobicoke since 1999. Nut Brown Ale is one of their flagship beers and it’s featured here today.

The flagship lineup features the aforementioned Nut Brown Ale, a Pale Ale and an IPA. The lineup is complimented by seasonal brews, some annual and some one-offs. Black Oak Brewing Co is a small operation but shows a strong commitment to the craft.

The style of brown ales can trace its roots to England in the early 1800s. The style became very popular in the 1920s and branched off into the style of Milds. The most notable beer in the style is likely Newcastle Brown Ale, from Newcastle in Northern England.

Nut Brown Ale pours a deep chestnut-brown colour with and ample white and foamy top. The aroma is of toasted bread or biscuits. The flavour is a balance of caramel, roast, and nuts. There is a rounded and lingering finish. There aren’t any overpowering flavours, typical for UK style beers.

This beer is an underdog. I wish I purchased more than I did.  It’s definitely worthy of regular rotation in my fridge and certainly worthy of a try from any beer fan. Nut Brown Ale isn’t the most adventurous beer you will try this year, but if you can appreciate the subtle nuances in a well crafted beer that’s brewed to style then this beer is for you.
