We have reached the final installment of ‘Pumpkin Ale October‘ and it’s been a wild ride. We are building to a crescendo, and it seems we may have reached the pinnacle of the style. This week, we profile Pumpkin Ale by Great Lakes Brewery.
Great Lakes Brewery (also known as GLB) is well known for its regular lineup of stellar craft beers, however, you would be remiss if you neglected to sample their seasonal and specialty beers. The seasonal and specialty beers often have clever names that aptly describe the tasty beer. Some past favourites of mine include, Harry Porter, Audrey Hopburn, and Miami Weiss. Each and every Fall, GLB brews their Pumpkin Ale to much fanfare.
Pumpkin Ale is hazy and orange in colour with an ample white foamy top. The carbonation level is medium. The aroma is distinctly pumpkin with a touch of allspice. The flavour is a balance of pumpkin and spices with no dominant flavours. The mouthfeel is medium and the finish lingering.
Overall, this beer is incredibly well balanced. Pumpkin Ale lays out all the flavours you expect and walks the delicate line to keep any one element from overpowering the taster. I liked it straight away. It really seemed as though this beer was conceived in its totality, instead of just adding pumpkin and spices to a standard recipe. You should try this beer.
