This week’s entry into the beer profile is Retronym by Great Lakes Brewery. Retronym is an English IPA brewed in celebration of GLB’s 30 years of craft beer excellence.
I needed to look up the term retronym, as I was not naturally familiar. According to Wikipedia (yes, I’m lazy), the term is used to describe words that are created to differentiate between two words when there has been a change and clarification is required. A common example is the AM/FM radio. prior to FM frequency use, it was just called the radio.
I think I have now deciphered the naming of the beer. The style is an English IPA, originally known just as an IPA before the American version of the style. In this case, the style is the retronym. Very clever.
The appearance of Retronym is a clear amber with medium to low carbonation and a reserved white foamy top. The aroma is floral and earthy with a touch of spice. The flavour has a touch of the aromatics, and adds some malt sweetness and a fruitiness from the English yeast. The finish is a fading and quiet bitterness.
The English IPA is truly my favourite beer style but I find they are hard to come by on this side of the pond. Retronym is a very tasty edition that is true to the style. Its equal parts floral, malty, and bitter. No one part stands out or is out of balance. Do yourself a favour and find yourself a Retronym by Great Lakes Brewery.
