Today’s beer profile comes to us from Sweden, via Toronto’s East End. Zodiak is an American IPA from Stockholm brewery, Omnipollo, that is contract brewed in Toronto. Brunswick Bierworks is the Canadian brewery partner that is bringing this delightful beer to us. I picked up my can at my local LCBO near High Park in Toronto.
Local or Not?
Omnipollo makes its home in Stockholm, Sweden. The beer is actually produced in Toronto so I’m going to call it local with a flair. There isn’t much information on the can or the web about the beer or the brewery. I was on a beer run and just grabbed every beer I had never seen before in the craft beer section of my local LCBO. It wasn’t until a week later when I re-discovered Zodiak in my fridge.
Zodiak is a pale yellow and is really hazy, almost murky even. It’s got a vanishing but foamy white top. The aroma is present but not overpowering. It’s a general citrus and floral hop smell. The taste is hop dominant and there’s no real malt presence. The taste is a bit of tangerine, grapefruit, and a touch of pine (classic American hop profile). The mouthfeel is really thick and juice-like and softens the bitter finish.
Overall, Zodiak is similar to a New England IPA (NEIPA) in that it’s hop-dominant, hazy, and almost juice-like. It differs in a few ways though: it’s more bitter, has less aroma, and Swedish! It’s a really interesting combination that makes it a hybrid between the standard American IPA and the new-age NEIPA. It’s really tasty and it’s certainly worth a go!
